Fruit tree plantations in rural villages in Senegal

Over 8,000 fruit trees will be planted, making farmers financially independent and improving living conditions for their families.

Climate variations in Senegal's arid zones are leading to considerable desertification of the land. In 50 years, rainfall has fallen by 30%, making it impossible to reclaim land for cultivation.

These droughts have serious consequences for rural families already living in precarious conditions: lack of quality food in sufficient quantities, anaemia and stunted growth in children, and even high infant mortality.

To increase farmers' incomes and thereby improve their living conditions and those of their children, fruit tree orchards are to be planted in the rural region of Fatick province. These plantations will provide fruit production for at least 30 years, enabling beneficiary farmers to increase their income by 50% after just 2 years. Farmers are trained in fruit-growing techniques for semi-arid climates, and receive help to ensure access to water via local wells.

In the end, 100 families should benefit from the plantations and become financially independent, and 300 children will have access to school education, social cover and better nutrition.
