Press Release: The Van Werveke-Hanno Foundation Now Under the Aegis of the Fondation de Luxembourg

On July 15, 2021, the Minister for Higher Education and Research, Claude Meisch, and the Director General of the Fondation de Luxembourg, Tonika Hirdman, signed an agreement officially placing the Auguste van Werveke-Hanno Foundation under the aegis of the Fondation de Luxembourg.

Established in 2002 through the will of the late Anita van Werveke-Hanno, the Auguste van Werveke-Hanno Foundation awards scholarships to students residing in Luxembourg who are pursuing studies in architecture or fine arts. It was created in memory of the founder’s father, Auguste van Werveke-Hanno, who was a drawing teacher at the former State School of Artisans.

The scholarships, currently set at €5,000 each, are awarded based on academic merit, progress in studies, and extracurricular achievements in the candidate’s field of study. Since 2003, 63 students have received scholarships from the Foundation, totalling €269,000 in awards.

By converting the Auguste van Werveke-Hanno Foundation into a sheltered foundation of the Fondation de Luxembourg, the Ministry of Higher Education and Research is entrusting the Fondation de Luxembourg with the administrative and financial management of the foundation. However, the application process for scholarships will continue to be managed by the Ministry.

“In working with the Fondation de Luxembourg, we aim to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Foundation’s management, particularly on the financial side, and to make the best possible use of the funds to benefit as many students as possible. As an organisation specialising in philanthropic project management, the Fondation de Luxembourg is particularly well positioned to support us in this regard,” stated Claude Meisch, Minister for Higher Education and Research.

“We are honoured to welcome the Auguste van Werveke-Hanno Foundation under our umbrella. Supporting education at all levels is one of the key focus areas of the Fondation de Luxembourg. The integration of the Foundation will strengthen our philanthropic work in the field of education, particularly on a national level. We thank the Ministry of Higher Education and Research for its trust, and we look forward to this collaboration,” said Tonika Hirdman, Director General of the Fondation de Luxembourg.

The Fondation de Luxembourg was established in December 2008 by the Luxembourg State and the Œuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte. Its mission is to promote philanthropic engagement by individuals and organisations through information, guidance, and the development of specialised tools and structures.
