The French historian Pierre Birnbaum participated in a conference-debate with Vincent Artuso, a Luxembourg historian, on Birnbaum's most recent book, "La leçon de Vichy - Une histoire personnelle", published in 2019 (Seuil).
In his work, Birnbuam takes an in-depth look at the Vichy regime, a period that remains controversial in France to this day, while exploring the blind myth surrounding the French resistance.
Pierre Birnbuam is a French historian of Jewish origin. Born in 1940 to a German-Polish family, he was forced as a child to hide for two years in the village of Omex, near Lourdes, in order to escape persecution.
Vincent Artuso is a Luxembourg historian, specialized in the history of Luxembourg under the nazi occupation, between 1940 and 1945.
The debate was organized by the Institut Pierre Werner, with support from the Fondation CANDIDA, under the aegis of Fondation de Luxembourg, and from Neimënster.
