He succeeds Yuriko Backes, who has been a member of the Board since 2022. Henri Grethen, President of the Fondation de Luxembourg, said: ‘I am delighted that Mr Roth is stepping in to continue the Luxembourg government's commitment to the Fondation de Luxembourg in its mission to promote philanthropy. I would like to take this opportunity to warmly thank Mrs Backes for her unwavering commitment and support over the last few years.
Minister Gilles Roth emphasised, ‘As an umbrella foundation, the Fondation de Luxembourg contributes to the holistic range of products and services offered by our financial centre as an international wealth management centre and a leader in sustainable and impact investing. By supporting donors at every stage of their philanthropic projects, the Fondation contributes to tackling the key challenges of our time, including poverty reduction, gender equality and climate change.
In addition to this appointment, Gilles Walers, coordinator of Social Affairs, Employment and Training and European Affairs at the Chambre des Métiers, succeeded Serge de Cillia on the Board of Directors on 21 January 2024. Appointed in 2013, Serge de Cillia has served two consecutive terms.
The Board of Directors of the Fondation de Luxembourg would like to thank Mrs Backes and Mr de Cillia for their commitment to the Fondation de Luxembourg, and would like to welcome its two new members.
Mr Gilles Roth was appointed Minister of Finance in November 2023, thirty years after being elected municipal councillor and then mayor of Mamer in 2000. A lawyer by training, he has held numerous political posts in Luxembourg during his long career, including co-chairman of the CSV parliamentary faction, vice-chairman of the Justice Committee and member of the Finance and Budget Committee.
Mr Gilles Walers, LL.M, will bring to the Board expertise acquired over 13 years as a lawyer specialising in banking and financial law, and then within the Chambre des Métiers as coordinator of Social Affairs, Employment and Training and European Affairs. He has also held administrative roles in local charities such as the EPI Foundation and Round Table Luxembourg.
