Mrs. Yuriko Backes, Minister of Finance, has been appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the Fondation de Luxembourg, a public-benefit foundation created in December 2008 by the Luxembourg State and the Œuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, with the mission of promoting philanthropy. She succeeds Mr. Pierre Gramegna, who had held this role since 2014.
A career diplomat, Yuriko Backes is the former Marshal of the Grand-Ducal Court. Prior to that, she served as the European Commission's Representative in Luxembourg, as well as diplomatic advisor and sherpa to Luxembourg Prime Ministers Jean-Claude Juncker and Xavier Bettel. Throughout her diplomatic career, she held various posts, including Deputy Head of Mission at the Luxembourg Embassy in Japan.
“I welcome the involvement of Mrs. Backes, who continues the Luxembourg government’s support for the Fondation de Luxembourg in its mission to promote philanthropy,” said Henri Grethen, Chairman of the Board of Directors. “On behalf of all members, I warmly welcome her and take this opportunity to sincerely thank Pierre Gramegna for his commitment and contributions over the past eight years, as well as for his unwavering support.”
Yuriko Backes commented: “Thanks to the Fondation de Luxembourg, philanthropists and donors have a trusted partner who supports them with tailored advice. This has significantly enhanced the services available within our financial centre. I am delighted to take on this new role.”
