Ten years of teaching Philanthropy to Wealth Management students

The Master’s programme is hosted by the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF).

This year, the class of 26 internationally diverse students learned about the motivations and expectations of today's philanthropists as well as existing structures and vehicles for philanthropic giving. The skills gained will serve them well as future wealth managers, so that they may better advise their clients toward a structured and efficient philanthropic strategy.

Students were asked to consider legal and fiscal aspects in cross-border giving, an essential topic in today’s globalized society, while better understanding existing approaches for impact-driven philanthropy. Specific examples and case studies allowed students to apply their learning to real-life situations, and gain proficiency in advising and engaging their future clients in the topic of philanthropy.

Joining Tonika Hirdman were two guest-lecturers:

• Hugo Mahieu, CEO of the Mangrove Foundation, who provided first-hand knowledge of his experience with venture philanthropy for the benefit of vulnerable populations and the environment, and,
• Laura Foschi, CEO of ADA (Appui au Développement Autonome), who introduced microfinance as an alternative approach to impact-driven philanthropy.
