Over the past week, we have borne witness to what many have thought would never again occur after the horrors of the 20th century—a war on European soil.

We wholly denounce Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, and especially condemn its practice of attacking civilians. These unjustified actions have upended the global security order as we know it, and it will have profound effects on communities and economies worldwide. Moreover, they have undermined the fundamental principles that guide international law.

The Fondation de Luxembourg stands in complete solidarity with the Ukrainian people and their fight for security, stability, and European values. We send our most heartfelt thoughts to all who have been affected, both directly and indirectly, by this devastating situation.

The global solidarity shown for the people of Ukraine, and the willingness to collaborate at all levels to end this senseless violence, are a great source of hope. While the duration of this conflict remains to be seen, we are confident that the foundations under our aegis, as well as the greater philanthropic sector, will step up to the plate to address the lasting effects of this crisis—just as they have in response to the pandemic, and other urgent causes.
