Upon receiving the award, the Jeunes Scientifiques Luxembourg Foundation was praised for its extracurricular program that introduces students to the scientific method and equips young minds with the tools to think critically, develop key research skills, and apply them to address issues impacting society as a whole.
During the ceremony, Sousana Eang, Director of the Jeunes Scientifiques Luxembourg Foundation, expressed her gratitude for the award:
“On behalf of the Jeunes Scientifiques Luxembourg Foundation, I thank the Science for Society Foundation and its founder, Mr. Jacques de Sellier, for their encouragement and support. We will use this grant to continue supporting the young participants of the Science:next program, mainly by helping them acquire materials for their science projects.”
The Science:next program runs throughout the school year and is open to curious youth aged 11 to 21. Participants gain hands-on experience and engage in interactive learning under the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers from various fields. The program also encourages students to prepare for and participate in competitions, promoting teamwork and communication skills. By the end of the program, participants are well-equipped to distinguish between fact and fiction—an aspect that is especially important to the Science for Society Foundation.
Indeed, the Foundation’s actions are guided by the belief that better scientific understanding in key societal areas promotes healthier public debate and more informed policy decisions. In line with this goal, the Foundation created the Science for Society Award in 2021 to annually recognize an organization or project that effectively communicates credible scientific information to the general public. This year marks the third and final edition of the award.
Candidates for the Science for Society Award are evaluated by an independent jury composed of members from the scientific community, policymakers, the tech sector, and the media. The jury is responsible for reviewing all applications and submitting a shortlist to the Foundation’s management committee. The winning candidate is then selected by the Science for Society Foundation’s management committee and awarded a €5,000 grant.
