Helping young people log off

Digital technology has become inseparable from the daily lives of young people in Luxembourg, influencing how they learn, communicate, socialise and spend their free time. More than 95% of residents aged 12 to 29 own a smartphone, 80% spend at least two hours a day on social media, and around 50% to 70% of surveyed young people say they check their phones several times an hour. The challenge is not simply to encourage young people to spend less time online, but to help them understand their digital habits, recognise when certain behaviours become harmful, and develop realistic strategies for using technology in a healthier and more intentional way.

In response to this need, as well as a growing global discussion on the ramifications of excessive screen time and social media use for young people, a new podcast in Luxembourg has been developed with and for youth. Titled brb mode, the video podcast explores excessive screen use, social media, gaming and other potentially compulsive digital behaviours through open, accessible and non-judgmental conversations. Rather than simply telling young people to disconnect, the aim is to help understand how these habits develop, recognise when their online activities begin to affect their well-being, relationships or responsibilities, and discover realistic ways to establish a healthier balance.

Aimed primarily at adolescents and young adults aged 12 to 26, the series also provides useful guidance for parents, families, teachers, youth workers and mental-health professionals. Each episode combines the perspectives of young contributors, content creators familiar with contemporary digital culture and qualified mental-health specialists. Young people are actively involved in shaping brb mode's themes, language and format, helping to ensure that the discussions reflect their experiences.

This project support will help the first season of brb mode, comprised of 12 episodes, come to life. Moreover, it will also support the creation of ancillary social media content and resources aimed at youth, families and educators. By making reliable information and professional expertise more accessible, the project aims to strengthen youth digital self-awareness, encourage healthier habits and help young people recognise when they—or someone close to them—may need additional support. More broadly, it seeks to create a trusted space in which digital dependence and mental well-being can be discussed openly, reducing stigma and building a supportive community around healthier technology use.
