Conference on cross border philanthropy at Musée National d’histoire et d’Art, MNHA - 16.10.2019

In the context of its Presidency of Transnational Giving Europe (TGE), the Fondation de Luxembourg organized on 16 October 2019 a conference dedicated to « The New Trends in European Philanthropy » at MNHA.

Following an introductory note by Nicolas Mackel, CEO of Luxembourg for Finance, we had the pleasure to host a panel consisting of representatives of major European structures. Among the panelists were Ludwig Forrest (Fondation Roi Baudouin), Dominique Lemaistre (Fondation de France) Michael Mapstone (Charities Aid Foundation), as well as founders of foundations under our aegis, Benoît Tesch (Fondation La Violette) and Maryline Mertz (Champ’seed Foundation).

During the discussions, the important role of TGE was highlighted, especially in facilitating cross border philanthropy in Europe. Champ’seed Foundation, which receives donations from all over the world, was mentioned as an illustration of the usefulness of TGE.

Luxembourg was in this context referred to as a model within the European Union for its pragmatic fiscal approach to foundations based in other member states.

Other topics discussed by the panel were the contribution of foundations in fostering social innovation, the investment approach of foundations, as well as the impact of technology in terms of facilitating donations.  In this respect, the launch in spring 2020 of a new IT platform was highlighted. This platform will allow donors from all over Europe to support online any beneficiary organization identified by TGE.

How to stimulate further philanthropy in Europe was central in the discussions during the conference, which led the panelists to express their vision for the future: the creation of a Single Market for Philanthropy in Europe.  To succeed, we need to continue pushing EU policy makers to better recognize philanthropy, pave the way to facilitate cross border philanthropy, create a better operating environment and leverage the impact of private resources for public good.

As it is usually the case for this type of events, the conference was followed by a walking dinner in one of the beautiful exhibition rooms of the museum. An opportunity for the audience (made of more than 60 participants) to further discuss about philanthropy with the panelists.
