Introducing Philanthropy to Wealth Management students - 17.09.2020

Fondation de Luxembourg’s General Director, Tonika Hirdman, led for the sixth time a 2-day course in Philanthropy for students of the Wealth Management Masters programme, part of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance at the University of Luxembourg.

Established in 2013, the Master in Wealth Management (MWM) programme aims to educate and train students with skills related to finance and wealth management, including the philanthropic sector, the importance of which is steadily growing in the Grand Duchy and in Europe.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the class was offered this year in a hybrid format. More than 30 students both in person and online connected to the seminar, which covered contemporary trends in philanthropy, including the specifics of venture philanthropy. Topics discussed included profiles of today’s philanthropists and how to meet their demands as part of a wealth management proposition. Students also learned about legal and tax aspects to take into consideration when advising clients wishing to give on an international scale, especially in terms of cross-border giving. Finally, the Sustainable Development Goals and their implications for private sector stakeholders were introduced.

Two guest-lecturers completed the course:

Hugo Mahieu, CEO of the The Mangrove Foundation under the aegis of Fondation de Luxembourg, offered a founder’s insight and experience, and Laura Foschi, CEO of ADA gave an introduction to microfinance.
