The Fondation du Pélican de Mie and Pierre Hippert-Faber was created in 2010 by Mr. Pierre Hippert, in memory of his wife. Just a year after its founding, the foundation established the Pélican Grant, to be attributed annually to promising doctoral candidates of the School for Systems and Molecular Biomedicine at the University of Luxembourg. Later, this support was expanded to include the Pélican Awards, which encourage post-doctoral students to undertake research projects in Luxembourg.
As of 2022, 42 doctoral and 2 post-doc students have benefited from support, for a total amount of nearly 1 million euros distributed. Grant recipients, besides their status as students of the University of Luxembourg, are typically affiliated with research institutions such as the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB), the Life Science Research Unit (LSRU), Centre Hospitalier du Luxembourg (CHL) and Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH).
The vision of Mr. Hippert in creating the Pélican Grant and Award has allowed students to pursue their scientific careers regardless of distance or cost. Through his ongoing generosity, Mr. Hippert's legacy continues to contribute to Luxembourg's reputation as a center of scientific excellence.
