Present in Luxembourg as a non-profit association since 2008, the scientific society is an international key player in the fields of sports traumatology and bone and joint diseases. For its future development, the ESSKA executive board has expressed its confidence in its Luxembourgish partners and has decided to maintain Luxembourg as the platform for its many international activities. Professor João Espregueira-Mendes, the President of ESSKA, explains: “The support given by the Luxembourgish institutions – among which the CHL as privileged partner from the beginning, as well as the Centre de Recherche Public-Santé, has facilitated the society’s recent developments and allowed for the creation of several new jobs in the scientific and academic sectors, two fields which are being strongly developed in Luxembourg.”

With the goal to respond to an increasing demand in science and education from its members as well as to anticipate the rapid medical and scientific advancements in the field of musculoskeletal medicine, the society’s leadership has decided to create the ESSKA Foundation. It will be placed under the umbrella of the Fondation de Luxembourg, an internationally recognised umbrella foundation supporting research and education. “By hosting this new foundation, Luxembourg has taken an internationally recognised institution under its umbrella. Education, research and dissemination of scientific achievements in musculoskeletal medicine and surgical technology are among ESSKA’s main goals.” says Prof. Romain Seil, Vice President of ESSKA and Head of the Department of Musculoskeletal Medicine of the CHL. He adds: “This newly created structure has enabled ESSKA to create a new scientific journal, the Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics, destined to publish the results of basic science research in musculoskeletal medicine, as well as the development of a new online education platform for ESSKA members, the ESSKA Academy.” The mission of the ESSKA Foundation is to support and promote scientific research in the fields of sports traumatology and bone and joint with the ultimate goal to improve the quality of life of patients.
